I have written to this before but evidently it doesn't matter to those who have. It is not their problem and a none issue not worth wasting their time on. They lump ones who have experienced this under the irresponsible title. LIke "unfortunately" the answer to no answer. Yet for those of you who struggle. Yes I mean really struggle where every dollar counts you may find this interesting. Like I said it is about those irresponsible types who had an overdraft. Yes I guess like me or perhaps you coping in today's world you made an error and now you must pay. I'm sure people who have rarely do that, make errors and for that they are blessed. Us, well in other ways.
Ok, to make this simple. lets assume your checking account has a $5.00 balance. Yes many of us don't even have that much. Are you with me, $5.00? Now a check comes into the bank for $10.00. You also, on that same day, make a deposit of $30.00. So lets look at how the bank handles it verses how perhaps it could be handled.
Bank Does
Bank Should
Check Balance $ 5 .00
Check Balance $ 5.00
Check arrives $10.00
Check arrives $10.00
Return Check Fee $20.00
None Deposit made $30.00
Deposit made $ 30.00 Balance $ 5.00
Balance $ 25.00
Now using the banks system you can see the difference. It is that simple, they make money. Their "Customer Service" [now just what is that] person will most likely not return the fee, may even chastise you and you will suffer an additional fee because of the returned check. The banks are happy. After all it is money in the bank to use a clich.
Now what used to be, at least at my bank and I say used to be what is what I defined as "Should Be". Yet the term Customer Service does not apply at all. It is another sign of this age. Blame it on people, character, culture, greed, it is what it is. So in the "Should Be" situation no one loses. No fee's, charges, reduced balance, happy customer. However, in the banks actions we see a different story. A lower balance, charges and fees, irate customer. Make sense? Only in that they made their $20.00. Yes and they really call that "Customer Service".
Now the key word here is POSTED. They items had not posted. Now I have no problem if there wasn't sufficient money to pay the check when the item was POSTED. That is not the issue.
Now that System Software Person, department head, "programmer" who usually makes out they are somehow a genius because they communicate with a computer, [will they say that openly, no] yet I have worked around them for over 45 years and know them well, they pride themselves that they write software, the thing that drives and tells the computer what it should do, well even this poor child wrote software in machine language 45 years ago and still can, so don't tell me about complex or sophisticated. Once you know the rules you know how to write nothing is sophisticated. However, that it may not be documented, another issue, but not sophisticated. Programs are simply a series of logical expressions, to make it simple, if , equal to, etc. So what ever they call themselves and think of themselves as doesn't matter. They most likely will say, "that isn't how the system works".
Ok genius we know that but it can be changed so go and do that? Don't tell me proprietary, can't make changes, a big job or whatever, the fact is it can be changed, if they want to and they don't. Why, most just pay and move on. It is a win for them all the way around. Profits and dividends and that is why our nation is where it is. The haves could care less safe in their little world, until and they really believe that until will never reach out and touch them. In fact their guaranteed answer is "balance your check book" and they are right. Oh, they also leave out they are perfect and they never make mistakes. Yes that should be expected from them.
So a person only knows when they identify you as "irresponsible". You then all of a sudden one finds out too late exactly what I am talking about. Lets hope in ones pride they never find themselves that way.
