The Covetous Nature of People For More.

Covetous is an inordinate desire to accumulate wealth and to secure material and physical possessions. It basically asks when enough is really enough? It is according to those who profess a belief in God, a sin. So how foolish are we that we truly believe because someone professes a belief in God that is where their heart is?
I just read today in the St. Petersburg times there are approximately 50 million people in the world who will be laid off because of this world wide money crisis. These people make a top pay of $2.00 a day and most $1.00 a day. Yes, I guess they need some more child laborers to exploit? What would drive the unemployment of these poor souls?Could it be greed and profits? Does that truly speak to the condition of man?
Now since a great majority of Americans profess a belief in God why is it that we are comfortable blaming these politicians we elected to office? Is that fair given our human condition and weaknesses? Are they not doing what we do and what we condone and want them to do? Are we who vote for them not an accomplice? How is that you say?
Well lets study one aspect, the housing crisis. Did this come about because people saw dollar signs? Frankly if they searched their souls they would see just what it is I am speaking to. It was what they wanted and where their heart was at that time. Did they look at it as evil? Selling a home is of itself not evil. It happens all the time but perhaps the motives were? Well what do I mean? If there was an actual need or just coveteousness? The dollars required to buy a new or bigger home, why? To fix up their existing home with more expensive amenities, like a big bath or kitchen, why? Never mind practical, but did that question of what is the in thing now ever come into the process? Yes and then there was the possible dollars, profit, greed a path to what they sought after which was more then what they had? The I can get thought? Everyone involved from those in power to the sellers to the buyers to the lenders and associated industries all brought this on themselves. As soon as it was a bust, just like drugs, who can I blame. Certainly not I. I only wanted what everyone else did, exactly.
We can go down item after item but that would take all day. The fact is we are a covetous people, mankind. We are easily offended when it is pointed out. How can someone accuse me? I go to church. Did you not see me there every week? I give to charity and my time and talent. I profess my belief. I suppose one can accept all that but does it show in your works? I'm good and decent, so what if I hire an illegal worker, I have to survive don't I? Is it what you do, each and every day in thought, word or deed? Does it show in what you don't do, hide, do in secret, omit, ignore, condone, approve of while professing the opposite?
Yes, America before we throw stones at our politicians you and me and all of us should really get down to brass tacks and look deep within to who we really are. No not who we say we are but who we are by nature of our works and what we do to demonstrate that what we believe in. It is what our works represent that we see the true nature of our hearts.
Hard stuff, but the start of being Born Again.

Top-level comments on this article: (1 total)Good article Robert. We have a lot in common, we Catholics and Buddhists! A Buddhist monk or nun meditates night and day, and actually work on three things (“get down to the brass tacks and look deep within” as you wrote). They actively work on their greed (covetousness), their hatred, . . . and their delusion. The greed can be seen in the grasping of their own opinions. The hatred is reflected in the aversion toward those who disagree with those opinions, and the delusion is in thinking that a little man or woman stands behind their thoughts – or that a self exists. How many people really look at their greed, hatred and delusion, however? Or admit that they are even susceptible to these things? This is where the world can become a better place - if people begin training themselves like this, i.e. looking inside. Best as always…………..ePlease log in to respond to this comment.Yes E that is why decent and good peole everywhere need to focus on the good things, the spiritual things the peacful things. When I look I see a man by their works and not what they profess. Color, race, religion are meaningless for God judges the heart. The characteristics demonstrated by good peole are peace and an inner spiritual awareness and it gives me the sign and the symbol that tells me in their heart is love, compassion and mercy. It is man who hangs a shingle on themselves and professes they are but are they what they profess? God just calls us man. Keep up the good wrok, perhaps the brotherhood of man will one day be able to grasp the simple truths which are summed up in love. All the very best as usual RTM.Please log in to respond to this comment.
